Vancouver’s Best Bar Personality - 2018

Winner Altos Tequila Tahona Society Collective Spirit - 2018

There are few professions whose primary objective is to advance the cause of humanity rather than simply to make money or accrue power. Among this limited group of humanitarians I would number teachers, nurses, bookstore owners, and bartenders.
— Jack McDevitt

I've spent over 15 years now either standing behind or managing a bar and it's guests. I started my career in Winnipeg, MB, Canada where I cut my teeth in all sorts of establishments from concert venues, casual restaurants, pool halls, nightclubs, and even a karaoke bar. After a short long-distance love affair with Vancouver, BC I packed my bags and moved there on New Year's day in 2011 hoping to ply my trade in it's world-class bar and hospitality community. Throughout my years on the west coast I've been fortunate enough to work in many of Vancouver’s top-tier restaurants and bars, including establishments under the umbrellas of the Donnelly Group, Glowbal Restaurant Group and Hawksworth Restaurant Group.

In all my years doing this I've become somewhat of a collector of certifications and credentials including those from the International Sommelier Guild (Level I), Beverage Alcohol Resource Group (Advanced Certification), West Indies Rum and Spirit Producers Association (ACR Diploma), Consejo Regulador del Tequila (Level T), Society of Wine Educators (Certified Specialist of Spirits) and Pernod Ricard & École Hôtelière de Lausanne (Maison Graduate). I'm also currently in the works of adding to that by (hopefully) being one of the first people in the world to achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). I guess all these pieces of paper somewhat validate my overflowing collection of cocktail, bartending and spirit books.

If you can't find me mixing up drinks for people, I might be busy in my role as National Portfolio Ambassador for Sovereign Canada travelling the country and helping to educate and empower bartenders across Canada, or I could be fulfilling my duties for the Canadian Professional Bartender’s Association board as their Director of Communications, or maybe be acting in my role as a founding director in the Mind the Bar mental health initiative, a topic I've become impassioned about in recent times. If none of that is keeping me busy then there's a good chance I'm taking the opportunity to travel and immerse myself in a foreign food & drink culture hoping to absorb as much as I can to help better further myself, my bar programs and my ability to teach those around me.
